Dr Abhijit Maté, MBBS, FRCP (UK), Dip Geriatric Medicine (UK), MBA, is the only Consultant in Neurological Rehabilitation in Cornwall.
Dr Maté is based at the Marie Therese House Neuro-rehabilitation unit at St Michael’s Hospital, Hayle and at the Phoenix Ward Acute Stroke Unit at Royal Cornwall Hospital, Truro. For the last 10 years, he has led a multi-disciplinary team service managing patients who had recent onset neurological illness or injury.
Conditions managed on the neuro-rehabilitation unit include acquired brain injury, traumatic brain injury, hypoxic brain injury, subarachnoid haemorrhage, cerebral infections, and neurosurgeries. He also treats patients with spinal cord injury and other neurological conditions such as Guillain Barre Syndrome and Multiple Sclerosis.
Dr Maté also works as an Acute Stroke Consultant, managing patients on the hyperacute and acute stroke unit, and those with thrombolysis and thrombectomy and in the early period after a stroke.
In addition to his work in acute services and rehabilitation units, Dr Maté works in the community. He runs a neuro-rehabilitation outpatients service, a spasticity management (Botulinum Toxin Treatment) clinic, delivers community-based assessments and supports a community-based brain injury team and neuro-therapy team, which he developed alongside a Consultant Therapy colleague.
