Medico-Legal Experience

Dr Imtiaz Syed is a SAS Psychiatrist with over twenty years’ experience preparing independent medico legal reports across criminal, civil, family and immigration jurisdictions. He provides structured, evidence based opinions grounded in DSM 5 and ICD 11 diagnostic frameworks.

He is regularly instructed in matters involving fitness to plead, criminal responsibility, risk assessment, psychiatric injury, complex trauma, asylum and human rights claims, and mental capacity under the Mental Capacity Act 2005. His reports are CPR Part 35 compliant and prepared in accordance with Tribunal Practice Directions and relevant case law.

Dr Syed is Bond Solon trained and an Accredited Direct Medical Expert under MedCo. He prepares clear, balanced reports designed to assist the Court and has experience giving oral evidence in tribunal and court proceedings.

He accepts instructions from both claimant and defendant solicitors. Assessments are conducted in person across the United Kingdom or via secure remote platforms where appropriate.

Clinical Experience

Dr Syed has over one decade of frontline clinical experience within NHS and independent sector services.

His background includes adult general psychiatry, forensic settings, and specialist services. He has assessed and managed patients with severe mental illness, trauma related disorders, personality disorder and neurodevelopmental conditions within custodial, community and inpatient environments.

He has extensive experience undertaking structured risk assessments, contributing to tribunal reports, CPA reviews and Mental Health Act processes. His clinical knowledge strengthens his medico legal analysis, particularly in complex presentations where trauma, vulnerability and cognitive factors intersect with legal issues.

He remains in active clinical practice and is recognised for thorough assessment, detailed documentation and structured psychiatric formulation.
