Medico-Legal Experience

Dr Aonghus Ryan has substantial experience conducting a variety of assessments, neuropsychological formulation and interventions for people with acquired brain injury in medico-legal and case-managed contexts.

Dr Ryan has acted as expert witness for the family court and holds particular expertise in mental capacity assessments in the context of pre-morbid psychiatric diagnoses.

Clinical Experience

Dr Aonghus Ryan holds a BSc (Hons) in Psychology from Queen’s University Belfast, an MSc in Foundations of Clinical Psychology from Bangor University, and completed his doctoral training at the University of Oxford. He also holds a PgDip in Clinical Neuropsychology from the University of Glasgow, reflecting the breadth and depth of his expertise in Clinical Psychology and Neuropsychology. His special interests include acquired brain injury, neurobehavioural disability, stroke, and assessments under the Mental Capacity Act (2005).

Dr Ryan has substantial clinical experience across a range of settings, including post-acute and complex inpatient rehabilitation and long-term community rehabilitation. He has held senior positions such as Principal Clinical Psychologist at the Oxford Centre for Enablement (2020 to present, and previously from 2016 to 2017) and the Central England Rehabilitation Unit at Royal Leamington Spa Hospital (2017 to 2020). Earlier in his career, he worked with the Hertfordshire Neurological Service, Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, and the Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust, where he gained broad exposure to community neurological services and older adult mental health.

A dedicated educator, Dr Ryan regularly lectures on clinical neuropsychology at the Oxford University Clinical Psychology Doctoral Programme and provides clinical workshops to the Salomons PGDip in Clinical Neuropsychology. He has also pursued specialised training in areas such as neuropsychology of ageing and dementia and emotion-focused couples therapy.

Dr Ryan is deeply committed to advancing the field, as demonstrated by his numerous publications on topics including aphasia, apathy following acquired brain injury, and neuropathological inertia. He has also presented at several international conferences, sharing insights on neurobehavioural disability and rehabilitation.
