Medico-Legal Experience

Dr. Clive Bezzina is a Consultant in Rehabilitation Medicine, renowned for his pioneering work in the advancement of specialised neurorehabilitation and trauma services in Stoke on Trent. Dr. Bezzina’s passion for neurorehabilitation extends not only to clinical care but also to his role as a medico-legal expert.

As a highly experienced expert witness, since 2018, Dr. Bezzina has brought his wealth of medical knowledge to the medico-legal sector, standing out not just for his expertise, but also for his dedication to continuous learning. He undergoes annual CPD-accredited training, ensuring that his proficiency remains at the forefront of medicine and law, making him a sought-after authority in medico-legal reports and testimonies.

With medico legal training experience including Essential knowledge for the expert witness, BMA House London, Bond Solon’s Writing Expert Reports and Writing Expert Reports (Advanced), Dr. Bezzina offers specialised insights for a broad spectrum of cases.

Clinical Experience

Dr Bezzina, most recently based at the North Staffordshire Rehabilitation Centre, has a broad and extensive background in various surgical specialties, coupled with a specific focus on Rehabilitation Medicine.

Honing his skills in hospitals including Addenbrookes in Cambridge, Colman Hospital in Norwich and Glasgow Southern General, Dr. Bezzina displayed a deep commitment to advancing spinal injury rehabilitation.

In 2013, Dr. Bezzina undertook a role at the North Staffordshire Rehabilitation Centre’s Broadfield unit in Stoke-on-Trent. Here, his leadership was instrumental in the inception of trauma rehabilitation pathways at the Royal Stoke Hospital, transforming it into an award-winning unit. His specialisation in spinal and orthopaedics saw the integration of advanced training protocols for rehabilitation coordinators and Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANPs). Under Dr. Bezzina’s stewardship, services expanded to cater to complex spinal cases, including those necessitating ventilated care.

By 2016, Dr. Bezzina’s vision gave rise to the Acute Rehabilitation Trauma Unit (ARTU), a facility dedicated to patient leaving intensive care. Under his leadership, ARTU earned a distinguished position as one of the country’s five Level 1a Hyperacute units, joining institutions in Liverpool, Manchester, London, and Cambridge. In 2019 the ARTU team were announced as ‘Clinical Team of the Year’, a testament to his relentless pursuit of excellence in rehabilitation medicine.

Special Interests

Dr Bezzina’s areas of focus encompass traumatic and acquired Brain Injury including people with tracheostomies and prolonged disorder of consciousness, Spinal Cord Injury, Stroke, Cerebral Palsy, Complex Neurological Disability, Progressive Neurodisabilities, and Musculoskeletal Injuries.

During his time as a Specialty Registrar at Addenbrookes, Dr Bezzina co created the ‘Ongoing care and Reconstruction’ and ‘Rehabilitation’ sections for the Trauma East Manual of Operations and Procedures (TEMPO) guidelines. These guidelines, reflective of military standards, bridged his surgical experience with rehabilitation principles, emphasising a systematic approach to trauma response.
