Medico-Legal Experience
Dr Hetalkumar Mehta is a highly experienced consultant neuropsychiatrist expert witness with an extensive background in the medio legal sector, and in clinical practice and academic research. He has over 18 years experience in his medico-legal practice, regularly providing the courts with expert witness reports and testimony.
Clinical Experience
Dr Mehta is a Consultant Neuropsychiatrist at Mersey Care NHS Trust, managing patients with acquired brain injuries and providing sleep clinic consultations at Aintree University Hospital. He is the Responsible Clinician for a 12-bed inpatient service based at the Sid Watkins Building, where he provides neuropsychiatry opinions, manages patients under the Mental Health Act 1983 and DoLS, and conducts capacity assessments for patient admission, treatment, placement, and financial decisions.
From 2011 to 2015, Dr Mehta was a Consultant Forensic Neuropsychiatrist at St Andrew’s Healthcare in Northampton, managing patients on medium secure forensic psychiatry and neuropsychiatry wards. He covered the forensic medium secure deaf service and managed patients in the PICU as well. He has extensive experience with mentally disordered offenders, including adolescents, and those needing various levels of security, prison services, court diversion, and community care. He also managed acutely unwell patients, forensic patients who were recalled, and patients with acquired brain injury, autism, and learning disabilities.
Dr Mehta’s expertise in neuropsychiatry includes managing organic psychiatric disorders, sleep disorders, dementia, Huntington’s disease, Tourette’s syndrome, complex epilepsy, non-epileptic seizures, and functional neurological disorders. Dr Mehta is experienced in old age psychiatry, conducting capacity and cognitive assessments, and managing older adults in various settings. He has also worked extensively with learning disabilities, managing autistic spectrum disorders, dementia, and epilepsy in LD patients across various settings.

Dr Mehta has a special interest in sleep disorders and alcohol-related brain injury.
