Medico-Legal Experience

Dr Mohamed Sakel is a Consultant in Neurorehabilitation Medicine with more than 30 years of clinical experience and significant expertise in acquired brain injury, spasticity management, spinal cord injury, and complex neurological rehabilitation. He is the Medical Director of the Frenchay Brain Injury Rehabilitation Unit, a 52-bed Level 1 neurorehabilitation centre commissioned by NHS England.

Dr Sakel has provided independent medico-legal reports since 2022, instructed by both claimant and defendant solicitors. His reports cover acquired brain injury, polytrauma, spinal and neurological injury, and complex rehabilitation needs. He has completed formal expert witness training with the British Medical Association (2025) and has co-authored academic work on legal and ethical issues in neurorehabilitation.

Clinical Experience

Dr Sakel is a recognised clinical leader in neurorehabilitation and holds a Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians. He has held senior consultant posts across England, including:

  • Medical Director and Consultant Physician, Frenchay Brain Injury Rehabilitation Unit (2025–present)
  • Consultant Physician, Central England Rehabilitation Unit, Warwickshire (2024–2025)
  • Director of Neurorehabilitation, East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust (2003–2024)

He has managed patients with traumatic brain injury, stroke, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, polyneuropathy, and incomplete spinal cord injuries. His clinical specialisms include neuromodulation, neurotechnology, spasticity, and robotics in rehabilitation.

Dr Sakel also holds academic appointments and supervises doctoral students. He has led or collaborated on more than 20 clinical trials and has received over £10 million in research funding. He has published widely and speaks regularly at international conferences.
