Medico-Legal Experience

Dr Terence McLoughlin is a Consultant in Emergency Medicine with extensive medico-legal experience, particularly in cases involving acute trauma, concussion, and clinical negligence. He provides reports across condition and prognosis, causation, breach of duty, and personal injury, and has been instructed in both civil and criminal matters, including drink-driving and clinical negligence claims.

Bond Solon trained, Dr McLoughlin has appeared in court as an expert witness and is currently instructed in the UK’s largest class action for Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), preparing reports for hundreds of former professional athletes. He is regularly instructed in claims involving traumatic brain injury, concussion, and the long-term effects of head trauma.

Clinical Experience

Dr McLoughlin is a Consultant in Emergency Medicine at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital and Deputy Clinical Director of Research for the University Hospitals Liverpool Group. He is Co-Director of LEDRUS, a multidisciplinary research unit, and Principal Investigator on several national and international trials in concussion, traumatic brain injury, and dementia.

He has held leadership roles in medical education, wellbeing, and research, and has extensive experience in emergency care delivery, service development, and clinical governance. Dr McLoughlin’s clinical expertise spans acute trauma, head injury, musculoskeletal injury, and psychological sequelae of emergency presentations.

Alongside NHS work, he has private appointments at The Sefton Suite and Re:Cognition Health, and is Honorary Clinical Lecturer at Liverpool John Moores University.

Special Interests

Dr McLoughlin has particular expertise in traumatic brain injury, concussion, chronic post-traumatic symptoms, and acute musculoskeletal trauma. He also has a strong interest in medicolegal aspects of emergency medicine decision-making, including breach of duty, delayed diagnosis, and capacity in high-pressure environments.

He has supported elite athletes and organisations, and served as an expert adviser on concussion to HM Government through the Love of the Game charity.
