Medico-Legal Experience

Mr Richards has completed Bond Solon expert witness training in report writing and accepts instructions on a records-only basis in paediatric neurosurgical claims, including hydrocephalus and shunt complications, traumatic brain injury in children, paediatric spinal disorders and paediatric brain tumours. His opinion addresses breach of duty and causation, with prognosis addressed so far as the records allow. He does not accept instructions involving suspected non-accidental injury.

He has a strong academic background, including peer-reviewed publications, international presentations and involvement in multicentre neurosurgical trials, including the BASICS shunt trial and ENLIVEN-UK. His reports are informed by current clinical practice, research experience and a structured approach to complex neurosurgical evidence.

Clinical Experience

Mr Richards is a Consultant Paediatric Neurosurgeon at Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, in active operative practice. His clinical work includes hydrocephalus and CSF disorders, neuro-oncology, spinal disorders and traumatic brain injury in children.

He has previously held consultant posts at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and Oxford University Hospitals, and completed an international fellowship in clinical paediatric neurosurgery at The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto. His neurosurgical training was completed in the UK, leading to the Certificate of Completion of Training in Neurosurgery in 2023.

His practice includes the operative management and long-term follow-up of children and young people with complex neurosurgical conditions.
