Consultant Geriatrician and General Physician
Medico-Legal Experience
Consultant Geriatrician and General Physician Dr Ben Wildblood is an experienced expert witness in medical negligence and personal injury cases. He provides reports on breach of duty, causation, and prognosis, with instructions received from both claimant and defendant solicitors, including NHS Trusts.
His particular expertise lies in cases involving frailty, complex comorbidity, polypharmacy, and decision-making in acute hospital settings. He frequently reports on the standard of care provided to older patients admitted with falls, infections, delirium, and heart failure, and offers informed opinion grounded in daily clinical practice on busy inpatient units. His analysis is informed by a deep understanding of how frailty and pre-existing conditions impact outcomes and care expectations.
Dr Wildblood advises NHS Trusts on claim investigation and resolution. He is actively involved in medico-legal education and has spoken at a range of conferences, including events at Bristol Civil and Family Justice Centre and with 3PB Barristers. He regularly presents on the role of the geriatrician in the Court of Protection and has supported NHS service reviews involving violence, aggression, and duty-of-care challenges in high-risk inpatient settings.
Clinical Experience
Dr Wildblood is a Consultant Geriatrician and General Physician at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust. Since 2020, he has worked across both acute and specialist services, leading care for older people with complex medical needs.
He is the founder and clinical lead of the Patient focUsed Liaison Service for the Elderly (PULSE), which delivers geriatric support to patients undergoing cardiac care and surgery. Working alongside cardiologists, surgeons, and specialist nurses, he provides frailty assessments and contributes to decision-making in cases involving transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), advanced heart failure, syncope, and device management. He leads a weekly outpatient clinic for older adults with cardiac conditions, and participates in a weekly structural heart MDT.
His core inpatient work is on the Older Persons’ Assessment Unit, where he leads multidisciplinary care focused on early supported discharge and frailty management. He also participates in the general medical on-call rota and has experience in high-dependency settings, including respiratory high care and the coronary care unit.
Before taking up his consultant role, Dr Wildblood completed higher specialty training in geriatric and general internal medicine in the Severn Deanery, and a post in renal and transplant medicine. His clinical placements covered movement disorders, orthogeriatrics, stroke, and community geriatrics.
Dr Wildblood is College Tutor for Internal Medicine Training at the Bristol Royal Infirmary, overseeing the development of approximately 40 junior doctors. He has designed and led multiple regional teaching sessions and regularly contributes to simulation-based education. He holds a postgraduate certificate in medical education and supervises both undergraduate and postgraduate trainees.
He has led or contributed to multiple quality improvement projects focused on frailty, medicines optimisation, anticholinergic burden, and inpatient cardiac care for older adults. His service development work has been nationally recognised and has directly improved outcomes for elderly patients in Bristol.
