Medico-Legal Experience

Dr Iqbal Syed is an experienced Consultant in ENT, Otology, Neurotology & Skull Base Surgery with an extensive background in clinical practice, academic research and teaching. He brings this experience to his developing medico-legal practice, specialising in ear conditions, hearing , tinnitus and balance disorders, neurotology and lateral skull base surgery.

An ENT Expert Witness, Dr Syed has completed more than a dozen medicolegal reports in the last 10 years, including civil litigation and personal injury reports, clinical negligence reports, death investigation and employment and benefit reports.

Clinical Experience

Dr Syed is a substantive Consultant in ENT, specialising in otology, neurotology and lateral skull base surgery with NHS Lothian in Edinburgh. He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Edinburgh.

He completed a TWJ Clinical Fellowship in Otology and Skull Base Surgery at the University of Toronto in 2014. His earlier appointments include six years as a Specialist Registrar in Otolaryngology in East Scotland from 2007 to 2013. His training covered otolaryngology, neurosurgery, orthopaedics and general and colorectal surgery, with overseas otolaryngology posts in Oman and India.

His published research covers Ménière’s disease, vestibular schwannoma, hearing loss, cochleovestibular dysfunction, middle-ear surgery and skull base conditions. He contributed the chapter ‘Molecular Genetics of Otology’ to the eighth edition of Scott-Brown’s Otorhinolaryngology and has worked as a reviewer for several otolaryngology journals.

He has served as faculty for temporal bone dissection and the FRCS Dundee course. His teaching experience includes doctors in training, medical students and colleagues preparing for FRCS and DOHNS examinations. He has served as an examiner for the National Assessment Collaboration OSCE examinations for international medical graduates seeking a licence to practise medicine in Canada.
