
Medico-Legal Experience
Mr Ashley Simpson is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a subspecialist focus on brachial plexus and peripheral nerve injury. He provides expert opinion on upper limb trauma, nerve injury, delayed diagnosis, complex reconstruction, and orthopaedic complications.
He accepts instructions in cases involving adult and paediatric nerve injuries, shoulder surgery, trauma, surgical technique, and long-term musculoskeletal outcomes. His reports reflect both academic insight and extensive clinical experience, and he is MedCo accredited for personal injury reporting.
Mr Simpson is actively engaged in medico-legal work through his London-based practice and is a published expert on NHS governance and access to peripheral nerve surgery. He has advised on service centralisation and national frameworks, and is currently involved in high-profile litigation and registry development.
Clinical Experience
Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the world renowned Peripheral Nerve Injury Unit, Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore, Mr Simpson specialises in adult and paediatric brachial plexus and peripheral nerve injuries, as well as complex upper limb trauma. His practice includes nerve repair, reconstruction, neurolysis, tendon transfers, and joint stabilisation, alongside the management of acute and chronic musculoskeletal injuries.
Before joining RNOH, he held consultant posts at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust, where he managed a wide spectrum of upper limb trauma and elective shoulder and elbow cases. His work included treating patients with nerve entrapments, thoracic outlet syndrome, scapular winging, rotator cuff pathology, and post-traumatic complications.
He completed advanced fellowship training in upper limb surgery at Guy’s and St Thomas’, and in sports surgery at Fiona Stanley Hospital in Perth, Australia, as well as international visiting fellowships across the UK and Europe in peripheral nerve and shoulder surgery. His orthopaedic training included multiple leading London centres, with focused placements in nerve injury at RNOH, sports knee and trauma at the Royal London Level 1 Trauma Centre, and extensive upper limb surgery training across London.
Mr Simpson remains heavily involved in surgical education and service development. He is Course Director for the London Brachial Plexus and Peripheral Nerve Course and leads cadaveric training for junior surgeons. He sits on the Education Committee for the British Elbow and Shoulder Society (BESS) and the Shoulder & Elbow Subcommittee of SICOT. He supervises the national and international peripheral nerve fellowships and is faculty for the Kings Health Partners Executive Fellowship in Surgical Leadership.
He combines high-volume clinical experience with a strong academic background, having authored over 40 peer-reviewed publications and delivered more than 70 presentations nationally and internationally.

Mr Simpson specialises in adult and paediatric peripheral nerve injuries, brachial plexus surgery, upper limb trauma, shoulder reconstruction, and surgical education. He has a strong interest in national service planning, evidence-based practice, and the use of AI and innovation in improving clinical diagnostics and medical education.
