For legal and rehabilitation professionals, understanding why a person is dizzy or unsteady can be critical to distinguishing between competing diagnoses, identifying missed or treatment-related causes, and understanding their long-term needs.
This session will examine the differential diagnosis of vestibular and balance problems, including symptom assessment, clinical findings and the range of possible underlying causes.
Dizziness, vertigo, unsteadiness, light-headedness, blurred vision during movement and fear of falling can arise from problems involving the inner ear, brain, sensory systems, cardiovascular system, medication or psychological factors.
The webinar will also consider how these problems may affect mobility, independence, employment, daily activities and quality of life, and how accurate diagnosis can guide further investigation, treatment and rehabilitation.

Meet Dr Richard Ibitoye
Dr Richard Ibitoye is a Consultant in Neurology and Stroke Medicine at North Bristol NHS Trust and an expert witness for NRC Medical Experts. His clinical and medico-legal practice covers dizziness and balance disorders, vestibular dysfunction, stroke, cerebral small vessel disease and complex neurological presentations.
He studied medicine at the University of Cambridge and completed his neurology training in the Severn Deanery. During a Clinical Research Fellowship at Imperial College London, he treated patients with vestibular disorders at Imperial College Healthcare and University College London Hospitals. His PhD research examined chronic dizziness in older people and its links with cerebral small vessel disease. Dr Ibitoye received the Hallpike Prize for his vestibular research and later completed a Guarantors of Brain Postdoctoral Fellowship examining the effects of small vessel disease on balance.
