This session will examine the long-term effects of Eating, Drinking and Swallowing (EDS) disorder following brain injury, stroke, spinal cord injury and other neurological conditions.
Created for solicitors, case managers and professionals involved in serious injury, clinical negligence and rehabilitation cases, the webinar will consider the clinical, nutritional and practical needs associated with EDS disorder. Claire and Vishwa will discuss how these needs may change over time and how professional evidence can support long-term care and rehabilitation planning.
About the webinar
Eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties can affect a person’s nutrition, hydration, respiratory health, communication, independence and quality of life. Their needs may involve texture-modified food and fluids, specialist equipment, assistance from carers, enteral feeding, clinical monitoring and regular review by relevant professionals.
These issues can raise a range of questions for legal teams and case managers, including:
- How does EDS disorder affect everyday life and participation?
- What risks require long-term monitoring?
- How might nutritional and swallowing needs change over time?
- What support, equipment and professional input may be required?

Claire will discuss the role of speech and language therapy in assessing swallowing function, managing risk and identifying long-term support needs. She will consider the practical effect of EDS disorder on daily routines, care arrangements, social participation and independence. Vishwa will examine the nutritional implications of neurological injury and disability. She will explore nutritional assessment, methods of nutrition support and the need for review as a person’s health, function and circumstances change.
Together, the speakers will explain how coordinated input from speech and language therapy and dietetics can support a person with EDS disorder and identify their present and future care, nutritional, rehabilitation and equipment needs.

Claire MacLaine is a Neurology Speech and Language Therapist and Clinical Liaison Specialist and an expert witness for NRC Medical Experts. She has extensive clinical experience in neurological rehabilitation, brain injury, complex disability and case management.
She has worked in traumatic brain injury rehabilitation, community speech and language therapy and specialist neurological services. Her medico-legal work covers communication, swallowing, functional effects, rehabilitation needs and long-term therapy requirements.💬 Meet Claire.
Vishwa Ramnani
Vishwa Ramnani is a Neurorehabilitation Dietitian and an expert witness for NRC Medical Experts. She has extensive experience supporting people with neurological conditions and complex nutritional needs.
